Maids with a Mission

It's the other Big Question -- will you be a bridesmaid? Sure, you can don a dress, hold a bouquet, and be escorted down the aisle by a gorgeous groomsman, but what are the other responsibilities?
Maid/matron of honor and bridesmaid responsibilities vary from family to family and culture to culture, or depending on the style of wedding. Here are some suggestions to get you started.


Maid/Matron of Honor

  • Help bride choose a wedding dress
  • Help choose the bridesmaid dresses
  • Buy own bridesmaid dress and accessories
  • Coordinate the bridesmaids' activities, such as meeting for a dress fitting
  • Assist bride with wedding plans, if asked
  • Help the bride address invitations, if she needs it
  • Spread the word about where the couple is registered
  • Organize and help pay for bridal shower and/or bachelorette party
  • Record who gave which gift at the bridal shower
  • Help bride get dressed before wedding
  • Help bride remain calm prior to ceremony
  • Hold groom's ring until minister asks for it on day of wedding
  • Sign the marriage license as the bride's witness
  • Stand beside bride during ceremony
  • Arrange bride's veil and train during the processional and recessional
  • Hold the bouquet and possibly gloves during the exchanging of the rings until after the kiss
  • May offer a toast either before or after the best man (optional)
  • Dance with the best man during the bridal party dance
  • Help the bride get out of her gown and into traveling clothes, if the bride and groom are leaving for their honeymoon right after the reception
  • Help the bride's mother get all the wedding gifts to the couple's new home while the couple is on their honeymoon


Bridesmaids

  • Help choose the bridesmaid dresses, if possible
  • Buy own bridesmaid dress and accessories
  • Offer to help the bride and maid/matron of honor any way you are able to, especially run errands and address invitations
  • Spread the word about where the couple is registered
  • Co-host and help pay for shower and bachelorette party
  • Participate in all pre-wedding parties
  • Stand to the left of the maid/matron of honor during ceremony facing the officiant
  • Dance with ushers/groomsmen and other important guests at reception
